If you think of all the plans you have for the future, it can feel overwhelming. Any big project requires dozens or hundreds of tasks, weeks or months of work, and that might not be easy to imagine.
We tend to overwhelm ourselves when we think about the future because it all seems so big. We might overthink things that haven’t happened yet and might not happen.
We might worry in excess about something that happened in the past or earlier, feeling as if one small thing can derail an entire day or an entire life. But that’s not true.
Focus on the present instead. Do what you need to do today and let the other things happen in their own time.
Take it day by day. Today was bad, perhaps. But tomorrow on its own terms will be better. Yesterday you had a bad day. But today, you can have a better experience if you don’t let that sour you.
When you worry too much about things yet to come or those that have happened, you can’t focus on the present. You can’t enjoy it. You can’t live it.
Take it a day at a time.
If you have a large project, take it a day at a time. Do what you can today, but don’t worry about all of it now. Just focus on the task at hand and how you will resolve it.
If you are concerned about something yet to happen, ask yourself whether there is something you can do today to improve the situation. If you can, do it. If you can’t, let it go.
You can always worry about things as they happen – there is no use pre-worrying or worrying after the fact.
This mindset is not easy to cultivate, but you can do it by just focusing on each day as it happens.
Allow things to come and go, and center your mind on the present. What is going on around you today? What is the best thing to focus on? What do you need to do now?
Sometimes you do need to plan for the future or consider the past. Just don’t do it all the time, don’t let your mind constantly wander elsewhere. Keep it grounded in the here and now.
In this way, you can reduce your anxiety and regret. You can enjoy more your daily life and focus your efforts where they will truly make a difference.
